Lamprais – yum yum!

Had lamprais yesterday, after a long time! Bought a few “mixed meat” I think a few weeks ago, and we steamed and used it.

This place, near Royal / Thustain sells pretty good lamprias. The “mixed meat” has Mutton, Pork and chicken – this is the one that we go for. They sell “fresh” lamprais and frozen ones, we generally buy the frozen one because its convenient for us and imo, any food which is stored and used (especially meat), tend to be much tastier. We steam the frozen one instead of dashing it with microwaves.

The mixed meat lamprais is pretty close to the authentic lamprais: it does not have an egg (yes, eggs should not be there in a bloody lamprais…). Unfortunately no beef either. The traditional lamprais would have had beef, and would definitely have been smaller and I would have eaten about four or five! (those were the days).

They have a veg (I tried it one poya day, was good: but I would have liked it had they called it “veg special”or something like that as there can never ever really be a veg lamprais) and a chicken

Neither mother dear not I recall the name of the place, but the number is 2573.908

The Muslim restaurant just about in front of Thurstan on the intersection or the one next to Vijitha Yapa Bookshop?

ooops.. its actually in between Raheema (ate there during my university days) and the Vijitha Yapa book shop. I think its actually a house….

Soon after you pass Raheema, there is a road to the left. Need to take that road.

After that, I think it was the first road to the right – anyways, that road is before some apartment. Then the last house on the left…Come to think of it, it is a house (as opposed to a shop…)

And I was wondering how you couldn’t know about Raheema :P This is new to me. Should ask some of the old school gang if they know more about this place. Have to follow those directions ASAP. Thanks Agni.

Well actually the place your referring to (I think) is on Peidris Road. If your coming down
Thurstan road, once you get on to Peidris Road it’s the first turn to your right, and last house down the lane.

Now I think I ought to get a FREE Lamprai for that advertisement. He he.. :)

The most decent lamparais I’ve tasted in town. Although “Soya” in the vege sucks.. the Chicken is pretty good.

i heard the sensaal lamprais is also good. don’t ever get the DBU one, it’s awful, expensive and is not enough. man, now i’ve got lamprais cravings..

The ones made by Mrs Warusuwithane of Pedris Rd are supposedly the most authentic available.

Its just up the little Road opposite Thurston College, First lane to the right, last house on the lane. Used to buy regularly from there, my favourite and vouched for as very good by an old Burgher gentleman known to me. My brothers prefeer
the ones made by Lakpahana but I believe Mrs Warusuwithane supplies them as well.

Made fresh on Saturdays and Sundays, available frozen throughout the week, book to avoid disappointment. The telephone No. is 2-573-908.

Hm, Chaar~Max, Jack Point, we should get some free lamprais, don’t you think?

Indyana, that is something that you must do. I will try and wrangle some lamprais, apparently a reader ordered 12 after seeing the post……I wonder who it was.

I love lamprais. Best I ve eaten so is from dutch burgher union.Hane not tried mrs warusawithanas lamprais.
Problem is all place who sell lampraise sell either chicken or veg. nothing with meat.
    so authencity is lost.

  17. Agni on

Aha, I suggest that you try the Mixed meat thing. but if you do plan, better call and check first.

ordered 15 yesterday :D gobbled two already for dinner :D lovely stuff from Mrs. Warusavithana

    I Tried Mrs Warusavithanas lampraise.
I must say that the lampraise of Dutch Burgher Union is far superier.
I have tried lampraise from Fab,Green cabin,Sensal,A place down wellawatta where a burgher couple makes it
Mrs Warusavithanas rice quantity is larger than the DBU. But quality wise can’t hold a candle to DBU lampraise.
By the way only the DBU and Mrs warusavithana provides mixed meat ones. all the other plces provides chicken or Veg.
Does anybody know who supplies the lampraise to DBU?

    anon: good to hear!

hiran: this is why I love competition!
Always gives us customers a choice :) Haven’t tried DBU, but I doubt I will try. Been buying from this place for a quite a while and the quality has remained the same throughout. I would say the same about Sizzle by the way when it comes to maintaining quality…

    Agni
since talking about sizzle, I must say in tried sizzle that is when they opened newly, for grills and I can only way when I asked for my steak to be Medium rare the waiter looked blank, and I got a well done steak and the veges on the hot plate was burned.
For steaks the best place to my knowledge is German reastaurant at the Makan maker building at galle face. The qulity has been consistant for the last 15 or so years that I have been going

oh, love GR! love the atmosphere, and I generally don’t try to finish what I order. Haven’t been there in a while.

Speaking of stakes, I once went out to dinner with some foreign clients. They ordered it medium-rare, I said “well done”; I could feel the look on my clients faces :( I will try medium rare next time I visit GR.

While not a stake, next time you go to sizzle check on some minced stake or something like that. Basically, they have made a “stake” using minced beef. That was tasty..

I have tried lampries from all these places and feel that Sensaal one is the best!
