Restaurant telephone numbers (LMD)
LMD has a pretty neat (and hopefully updated) list of telephone numbers. You can click here for it. Wish they had a pdf of the list on the site.
R&B: One of our manager buys a bottle
Hm, some people get higher salaries, but they don’t spend it on others; but others do!
Went to R&B sometime back, four guys and a few girls. Ordered a bottle of Vodka and a few chases. One of our managers paid with his credit card – and the rest of us where going to pay him back at office. When we asked, he says “oh, don’t worry about that”. Wow….
Loved R&B. First time I’ve been there. I think what I liked most was the people that I went out with. Two of the girls are leaving to Australia soon. Sad. I suppose that is part of life.
Hot butter cuttle fish?
How many times have you gone for Chinese and ordered (you or someone else in the group) hot butter cuttlefish? As a percentage of visits that is. Mine stands around 90%.
Divine Cake
I have tasted only the chocolate cake, and it is great! Its very light, and fresh (our office ordered from them). I don’t think they have an outlet as such for you to just go and buy one piece, but you can order a one pound cake – which means 10 pieces.
They need about a day’s notice. However if you give an order early in the morning, you can pick it up in the evening. They also deliver (and obviously charge for it).
They seem to concentrate more on the quality of the product as opposed to fancy rapping and fancy “presentation”. Love it.

We order alco – our manager foots the bill
Our manager is one of those rare individuals: the type who is well off, and is not stingy. He took us out for dinner yesterday. Most of us wondered whether its okay or not to order alcohol as a) its generally expensive and b) he doesn’t drink alcohol.
We came to the following conclusion. One lime juice will cost him LKR 190 ++. Two 25ml of Vodka will cost him LKR 95 x 2 ++. So, the guys who wanted to have a shot (including yours truly) went for two shots.
Question: Is it okay to order alcohol if someone else – whether friend, manager, client etc – foots the bill? I believe what we did is okay given the calculation. Another shot would not have been okay.
Lamprais – yum yum!
Had lamprais yesterday, after a long time! Bought a few “mixed meat” I think a few weeks ago, and we steamed and used it.
This place, near Royal / Thustain sells pretty good lamprias. The “mixed meat” has Mutton, Pork and chicken – this is the one that we go for. They sell “fresh” lamprais and frozen ones, we generally buy the frozen one because its convenient for us and imo, any food which is stored and used (especially meat), tend to be much tastier. We steam the frozen one instead of dashing it with microwaves.
The mixed meat lamprais is pretty close to the authentic lamprais: it does not have an egg (yes, eggs should not be there in a bloody lamprais…). Unfortunately no beef either. The traditional lamprais would have had beef, and would definitely have been smaller and I would have eaten about four or five! (those were the days).
They have a veg (I tried it one poya day, was good: but I would have liked it had they called it “veg special”or something like that as there can never ever really be a veg lamprais) and a chicken
Neither mother dear not I recall the name of the place, but the number is 2573.908
The Commons – service sucks
Commons has some good food. However, the service sucks, big time. I have been their thrice, and on all three occasions they messed up the order. My friend went there today, and they served her orange juice when she ordered passion fruit juice. Mishaps can happen once in a while, but not this frequently!
Another thing, I found the haughty attitude of the waiters poison the atmosphere when it came to placing and receiving the food.
Will I go there again? if my friends want to, yes, i will. Apart from the poor service, the food is good – assuming you get what you order – and seating is pretty comfortable. However, Commons will not be my first option.

Bars Cafe
Went there for lunch. Lovely place. This is down Duplication road neighbouring Dialog, about 500 metres or so from Liberty Plaza. I suspect that this is run by P&S.
Food was great – taste and presentation (presentation didn’t mean stupid meaningless, inedible, wasteful things – but nice and tasteful) . I had a mutton Godamba – it was great. The Mango juice i had was fresh – and guess what? it didn’t seem to be diluted with water or any such cheap trick like that!
It cost 1,800 or so for five people (of course, two ladies did share their meal….).
Vodka and Ice-cream
Mix Vodka (i use Smirnoff) and ice-cream 50/50. And keep stirring until there is no solid pieces of ice cream left. Wow, that makes a very good drink!
PS: This was not an original idea – had it once at one Ilgalato or something down Duplication road. Of course, their proportions where less generous and the stuff came in a dish and not a glass.
Cheers!
The Sandwhich Factory – Sri Lanka
A very good product. Unfortunately, they should have chosen another name, and put up a web site so that we can see and choose the products.
As far as i know, they do not have an outlet, and you can order over the phone. I have ordered twice, and at both times the delivery was punctual – friends at office order from them, and they seem to be punctual. Sandwiches are not cheap (the minimum non-vegie cost will be around LKR 200 for a 6 inch sandwich) – and you have to pay for delivery; but believe me that the stuff is good.
One more thing that i like about them is that they do not fake the product -when they say that the sandwich is 6 inches, that is exactly what you get: it looks small because they don’t try to hide the quantity with just plain old bread (and try to hoodwink me). The stuffing more than makes up for the apparent small size and it is filling. as far as i know, only one guy ordered a 12 inch one, and he saved some of it for the evening tea.
